What is the GI-MAP?
The GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus) is one of the most detailed stool tests available. Instead of growing organisms in a culture, the lab identifies them by their DNA using quantitative PCR (qPCR). This means it can detect organisms that traditional tests often miss, and it measures how much of each is present rather than just whether it’s there or not.

What does it measure?

  • Pathogens: disease-causing bacteria, parasites and viruses

  • H. pylori: including virulence factors that indicate how aggressive a strain may be

  • Beneficial bacteria: the key species that support digestion, immunity and a healthy gut lining

  • Opportunistic organisms: bacteria that can cause problems when they overgrow

  • Fungi and yeast: such as Candida

  • Worms and parasites

  • Gut function markers: digestive capacity (pancreatic elastase, fat absorption), inflammation (calprotectin), gut immunity (secretory IgA), gluten sensitivity markers and occult blood

Who is it for?
The GI-MAP can be useful if you experience:

  • Ongoing bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation

  • Changes in bowel habits without a clear cause

  • Suspected IBS, or symptoms that persist despite dietary changes

  • Recurring digestive infections or suspected H. pylori

  • Signs of poor absorption, such as unexplained weight loss, anaemia or low nutrient levels

  • Skin conditions like eczema, acne or psoriasis

  • Autoimmune or inflammatory conditions

  • Fatigue, brain fog or low mood where the gut may play a role

Because results are quantitative, the test can also be repeated later to see how your gut has changed after dietary or lifestyle changes.

Optional add-ons (additional cost)

  • Zonulin: a marker of intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”)

  • StoolOMX: bile acids and short-chain fatty acids, which reflect how well your microbiome supports digestion and gut lining health

  • Gluten peptides: checks for gluten exposure in your diet
